We all know that there’s a BIG problem in ELT. Around three quarters of all jobs are for ‘native speakers’ only.

But the recruitment is just one manifestation of it.

There is still also quite a widespread belief in our profession that ‘native speakers’ make better teachers. That they’re more proficient. Have wider vocabulary. Intuitive feeling for collocations. Intimate knowledge of the culture. The list goes on.

But these positive beliefs about ‘native speakers’, and the implicit negative ones about ‘non-native speakers’, do not only give rise to discriminatory recruitment policies.

They are also at the very core of how we teach English and how we write materials for teaching English

What do I mean by this?

Well, when we write materials for EFL or ESL, we emphasise conformity with a standard ‘native speaker’ model.

When we develop materials for teaching pronunciation, we often see foreign accent as negative, and the more ‘native-like’ the pronunciation, the better.

In these materials we provide our students with 'native speaker' models either of Standard British or General American English, so they can practise 'native-like' pronunciation.

When we write materials for teaching communication, ‘native speaker’ norms of communication are assumed as the default correct ones.

Sounds familiar?

These assumptions would probably work very well if English WAS a foreign language. However, the case with English is fundamentally different.

It is NOT used as a foreign language, but as a global lingua franca. In fact, our students are on average much more likely to use it to communicate with other ‘non-native speakers’, rather than with ‘native speakers’.

So why would we still insist on materials that focus primarily on ‘native-like’ pronunciation? Why emphasise ‘native speaker’ idioms which might not be transparent globally? Why default to ‘native speaker’ communicative norms? Why focus on ‘native speaker’ culture?

If we want our students to become successful user of English as a Lingua Franca, and not as a foreign or second language, our materials need to better reflect the reality of the English language.

So in these courses you're going to learn how you could make this transition from materials writing for EFL to materials that promote and develop ELF mindest and skills.

This transition can not only help our profession tackle the native speakerist beliefs, but also make your materials truly innovative and global, putting you at the absolute cutting edge of materials writing.

"The English teacher's advanced guide to pronunciation teaching has provided me with an insight into how English as a lingua franca is learned and used and how ELF pronunciation models can differ from those that are traditionally taught to ELLs. The online lectures are informative, and the discussion topics and tasks require course participants to consider how ELF pronunciation is relevant to their own teaching and learning situations ."

- Martin Cooke, English teacher in Taiwan

"English has rapidly become a language with no single national provenance and for which there are increasingly few ‘native speakers’ (even if we could accurately describe what such a term means - something we are far from being able to do). Teaching students to speak this international language - this lingua franca - is a special task and we need training to help us understand how to do it. Marek Kiczkowiak, with his background and experience, is just the person to provide such training"
